Dragon Pic Six

Another wonderful dragon picture from the talented Lindsay Oliver. Look you get three of them this time 🙂

Where do you think they are going? To a party maybe? Will you be having a dragon party sometime soon. If you are maybe you could send us some pics from that if you have made costumes, or party food.

I have to say out of the three dragons here I like the green one best. Which one would be the one you would chose if you had to have a dragon?

I have loved every single one of Lindsay’s dragon pictures, and you can see more of her artwork on facebook if you have that.

The last day of Dragon week

Hi, and welcome to day seven of dragon week. If you have been following along we hope that you have enjoyed the stories on youtube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCf0rErNnWS3dXAFyo1CWxCQ

and also the posts that we have been putting up here on the blog. It has been great fun doing a themed week, and who knows maybe we will do something similar in the near future.

If you have any ideas then you can send them to thestoryshedblog@gmail.com

Dragonlance

When I was a lot younger (hard to believe eh?) I read a set of books which were sold as the Dragonlance series. They had been written by a group of writers who were very keen on the game Dungeons and Dragons. There were many books written over the years by a whole team of writers

There is more information about the creators and the world they made here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragonlance#:~:text=Dragonlance%20is%20a%20shared%20universe%20created%20by%20Laura,the%20way%20to%20TSR%20for%20a%20job%20interview.

Perhaps the books are for teens up. There was a hope that a live action film would be made, but it never happened. However in 2008 there was an animated film created, and I am placing a link to it on youtube here. Please have a look first if you have younger people in the house, and judge if you think it suitable.

I have the board game somewhere around here….unless the dragons have managed to get it of course:

Jane has been busy

So on the blog we have tried to give as much in the way of resources as we could. The idea was to be able to make a dragon costume by the end of the week. But of course you could make a dragon costume any time you want. Any week can be dragon week 🙂

Jane has made up some masks from some of the links that we gave you earlier on in the week. Here are some of the pictures she took:

This was a simple mask, which involved two layers of mask. You could of course go with just the one layer and colour it in. Here is the template that was used here:

You could go with the basic template and add your own flames and horns on to the main part of the mask. Jane has used an old cereal box to glue the mask template to, but any cardboard that you have should do the job. The dragon costume we are making is made of a lot of scrap materials.

Here is a step by step guide in photos to the making of a mask:

We have had quite a few parcels through, and the air pocket padding has come in useful. It is like bubble wrap (which could also be used for scales as well)

We are hoping that our own costume will be ready by tomorrow, fingers crossed. If you do make a costume don’t forget to share it with us thestoryshedblog@gmail.com

The Hungry Dragon

So here we are on day six of Dragon week, and we hope that you have enjoyed it so far. Yesterday we had “The Hungry Dragon” on youtube. It was a story that my friend Jane Edwards wrote for her great-great-nephews. The link to the story is further down the page.

It is a brilliant story about three kings who live in a castle by the sea. They have to deal with a very greedy and hungry dragon. They have to used their heads instead of their swords and weapons. Because sometimes thoughts can lead us to the right thing to do.

Here is their castle. Right there by the sea. Can you imagine what it would be like to live in such a place. What kind of furniture would you have? Would you have tapestries on the walls? Could you draw the inside of your castle? Would it be dragon proof?

King Finley has a highland cow as his favourite animal. He rides it through the kingdom. What kind of an animal would you have if you had a castle? Would it be a big one or a small one? Here is an image of what King Finley’s beast would look like.

Our three kings have managed to beat back the dragon. Would you have done the same or could you come up with some other way of dealing with a dragon? Perhaps you could write a story or a poem to show us what you would do if you faced a scaly wyrm.

Puff reappears

Puff the magic dragon retired himself to Leith

Visited the dentist, to get some plastic teeth

In the song he vanished like a puff of smoke

He was just invisible, wearing magic cloak

Went around the country looking for a home

Difficult to find a place as he ain’t a gnome

Then one day he found it as he moved ahead

This will be my home now were the words he said

Grass and trees and playground there upon the Links

Lay himself upon the grass, and then took forty winks

Waking in the morning, it was some surprise

As the people watched him gracefully arise

“This is Leith you’re welcome” said the gathering crowd

To make sure he heard them they said it really loud

Found him a space portal so that he could hide

Puts him out of danger if he’s ever spied

Meet with him at sunset every single day

Puff the magic dragon will come out to play

But one word of advice if you see him there

Something that will show that you really care

Puff now he is older living there in Leith

If he’s feeling hungry give him liquid beef.

Playing the dragon

I have to say I love a board game, and there are plenty of ways of creating your own games based on dragons. You just need some paper and pens, and away you go. It is of course possible to print things off as well if you have a printer, but if you don’t you can draw the stuff yourself:

Here are some activity pages for younger folk, or even older folk who want to be younger at heart for a little moment of time:

It would be great to see what ideas you come up with yourself.

Making your own treasure

Any self respecting dragon is going to have a hoard of treasure. They normally have piles of jewels and gold so that they can sleep on them. Of course the bigger the dragon, then the larger the amount of treasure they will have.

I have tried to think of ways of making your own coins for the dragon hoard. I think you could probably make coins out of say playdough, and either leave it as it is or cover it in tin foil or other metallic sweetie wrappers (yes it means collecting them I am afraid). Here is a recipe for the play dough though:

https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/playdough-recipe

It is possible of course to make all sorts of jewellery from beads and string to paper and string. Perhaps it is time for our dragons of now to be more concerned about the environment.

Have a look around your house, and I am sure you will find things that would be considered to be treasure by a dragon. Just let your imagination run wild.
