Printable Masks

The internet is a fantastic place for all sorts of resources. So I have gathered together a few for you to be able to just print off a dragon mask. I hope that you find something that you can do here:

Or you can be adventurous and draw your own mask. I think most of us will have a box of cereals in the kitchen, so you can either cut out a mask from the internet or draw your own creation. Then string it or use some elastic bands to be able to wear it. Have fun with it.

Simpler wings?

So for the dragon costume, I wanted to give you a choice of different levels of work needed. I have now found some easier things to make. In this first wings and tail combo they have used felt, but I think that you can even go with a big old bin liner, or an old sheet if you have one.

If you have any thoughts or ideas for making a dragon costume then we would be pleased to hear from you 🙂

Bilbo and Smaug

Dragon week would not be complete without having some Smaug in there as well. This is the dragon from the book and film “The Hobbit” by JRR Tolkien

Smaug is the dragon that Bilbo has to travel and face after his long journey through the book. In the film he is voiced by actor Benedict Cumberbatch. And a scary dragon he is too. In fact if you are nervous about dragons, you may not want to watch this clip.

How would you deal with facing Smaug? What would you do if you were Bilbo? Maybe you could rewrite the scene.

What is a group of dragons called

I decided to try and find out what a group of dragons is called. The first that came up was a flight of dragons. Christopher Paolini calls them a thunder of dragons from the noise their wings make. Other names include a school of dragons, a weyr of dragons, and a wing of dragons. The Japanese word for a grouping of dragons is “Tatsu” apparently.

What word would you use if you were coming up with one. I would say a fiery of dragons.

The Stoor Wyrm

My friend Lindsay Oliver has drawn this fantastic dragon, which is apparently a Stoor Wyrm. I have to say I hadn’t heard of such a thing. When I first hear it I thought it was perhaps a dragon who runs a shop…but that would of course be a store wyrm.

Here is a definition of what it really is:

And here is Lindsay’s drawing of one. I feel tempted now to draw a dragon of my own. Maybe by the end of the week. Thank you Lindsay for allowing me to share yours.#

Here be Dragons

In olden times when maps were made, in areas that it was thought that there were dangers they would put images of dragons. “Here be dragons”.

Maybe you could draw up you own map to show where you can find dragons. Would it be in the mountains? In the desert? Would there be caves? Near the sea? Where would they live in your dragon world?

How would you show the dragons, and what other symbols could you put on your map to show dangers?
